Announcements

Please note: To accommodate reviewer and recommender holiday schedules, we will be closed to submissions from 1st July — 1st September. During this time, reviewers will be able to submit reviews and recommenders will issue decisions, but no new or revised submissions can be made by authors. The one exception to this rule is that authors using the scheduled track who submit their initial Stage 1 snapshot prior to 1st July can choose a date within the shutdown period to submit their full Stage 1 manuscript.

We are recruiting recommenders (editors) from all research fields!

Background: Deficits in learning and updating of fear and safety associations have been reported in patients suffering from anxiety- and stress-related disorders. Also in healthy individuals, anxiety-related traits have been linked to altered fear conditioning and extinction performances in the literature. Yet, different studies focus on different experimental phases, specific outcome measures and specific questionnaires to assess anxiety-related traits. What is missing at this point is an integrative approach on how anxiety-related traits are associated with fear conditioning and extinction performance, limiting effective translation of experimental insight on these etiology- and treatment-relevant processes to the clinic.

Methods: To address this gap we will conduct a systematic literature search and meta-analysis following PRISMA guidelines. We will use a series of nested random effects models to investigate the associations between anxiety-related traits and frequently used outcome measures of fear conditioning and extinction (e.g. psychophysiological and self-reports). Different questionnaires used in these studies to assess anxiety-related traits will be further used as moderators to inform us on whether the association between fear conditioning and extinction performance might be contingent on the specific questionnaire used.
Furthermore, we will conduct an item-based content analysis of the questionnaires used in the identified studies to assess anxiety-related traits. The Jaccard similarity coefficient will be used to evaluate the content overlap between pairs of questionnaires. This analysis will help to evaluate the similarities (or dissimilarities) between anxiety-related traits as assessed through different questionnaires and to further inform the interpretation of the meta-analytical results.
